Academic and Administrative Buildings: Central Campus

Blaustein Humanities Center

Blaustein Humanities Center entrance

Blaustein Humanities Center

Even though the inscription in the architrave reads "Palmer Library," this building is Blaustein Humanities Center. One of Conn's most iconic buildings, Palmer had been the main library from 1923 until the Charles E. Shain Library opened in 1976. Palmer lay dormant and abandoned for nearly 10 years before it reopened in 1986 as Blaustein Humanities Center (named after the parents of Elizabeth Blaustein Roswell '52, who provided $1 million in funding).

The building holds classrooms, offices and meeting spaces and, since 2018, the Otto and Fran Walter Commons for Global Study and Engagement, the embodiment of Conn's commitment to prepare students to live in a world of increased mobility and constant change. The bright and bold Walter Commons is a hub where Camels explore diverse world perspectives on the relevant issues of our times and gain a deep knowledge of other cultures that will, truly, help them make the world a better place. It's what Camels do.

Hale Lab

Hale Laboratory

Home to the Chemistry Department, Hale Laboratory features modern research facilities, advanced teaching laboratories and an innovative, studio-style, tiered electronic classroom with simultaneous multimedia capability.

Typically, chemistry labs at Connecticut College are held in the F.W. Olin Science Center for the first two years, then students move to Hale Laboratory for the final two years. Both facilities are bright, new, clean, safe and well-equipped. All students carry out their experiments in state-of-the-art fume hoods to ensure their safety.

The upper level labs in Hale include biochemistry, advanced synthetic organic, physical, inorganic and instrumental chemistry, and are divided up into small groups of 12 students or less.

Hillyer Hall

Hillyer Hall

Hillyer Hall

Build in 1917, Hillyer Hall was the first social space built on campus, and housed the College’s assembly hall, chapel and gymnasium. In the 1990s, a large renovation established a blackbox theater, Tansill Theater, on the second floor of Hillyer, with space for dressing rooms and ticket offices below. The most recent renovation to Hillyer, completed in 2023, was the addition of the Stark Center for the Moving Image, a home for our burgeoning film studies department, which includes production and classroom spaces.

If you're into this sort of thing, ghosts and paranormal activity have been witnessed in Tansill. If you're not into this sort of thing, ignore that previous sentence.

Warnshuis Health Center

Warnshuis Health Center

Warnshuis Health Center - historic photo

Ah, 1951 architecture. So funky. That's Warnshuis, which had served as the student infirmary and now houses the Office of Residential Education and Living (aka housing), Student Health Services (a licensed outpatient clinic staffed by medical assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners and a consulting physician) and Student Counseling Services (an accredited provider of outpatient mental health services). That long row of windows is actually a wing of the building that hangs over the campus loop road. Space age, isn't it?
