Alex Gianninas, Associate Teaching Professor of Astronomy, discusses what you'll find in the night sky during August 2026.

This summer, Lucy DeRosa ’27, Maddie Chirichella ’29, Ava Patterson ’28, and Cianna Grama ’27 are benchmarking a bioinformatics tool originally created by a previous Summer Science Research Institute (SSRI) student. Mentored by Professors Stephen Douglass and Yan Zhuang, the team is evaluating the software's accuracy in identifying DNA sequences and species—a key step toward analyzing biodiversity across diverse environments.

This summer, Alex Mello '28 and Henry Pfeifer '28 are diving into hands-on research to study Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), an invasive plant species. Working directly with Visiting Assistant Professor of Botany & Environmental Studies Michelle Jackson-Huaqui in the campus greenhouse, they are tracking its growth patterns and investigating how it impacts surrounding local vegetation.
